Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals using these medications must be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically have a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Doctors suggest the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle management.
